Lloris keen on Champions League push

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris says he is happy that his side emerged from the weekend with a hard-fought win against West Brom.

Spurs took advantage of slip-ups from Everton and Chelsea to consolidate 4th place in the Premier League, while just one point now separates them from Rafa Benitez's side in third place.

Only Arsenal's late 1-0 home win against Stoke stopped it from being a perfect weekend for Andre Villas-Boas' side.

While Gareth Bale has stolen the headlines all late and stole the show with a fine winner against the Baggies, Lloris has slowly emerged as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League, and has five clean sheets in the league to his name since the start of December.

The French goalkeeper, a summer arrival from Lyon, says he is happy that Spurs were able to exploit dropped points elsewhere.

"It was a good opportunity to close in on Chelsea and we took it, so it’s an important win for us," the Frenchman told the Evening Standard. "Arsenal's win over Stoke at the weekend put pressure on us and West Brom was a test but we did well.

"Our objective is to stay in the top four. We are only one point behind Chelsea, so if we could gain one place it would be a good thing for us."

Lloris, used to regular Champions League action thanks to his years with Lyon, says Champions League qualification this season is a must if Tottenham want to move on to the next level.

"We play this sport to play at the highest level and the Champions League is the best competition for any player," he said.

"We want to grow and Tottenham need to be in the Champions League but it's not about playing just one year in that competition, it's about playing there for many years.

"Economically it's an important thing for the club, so maybe the club need it to keep all the best players."
