Cristiano Ronaldo has fuelled the fire ahead of Real Madrid’s highly anticipated Champions League clash against Manchester United.

The Portuguese international will face his old club in a competitive fixture for the first time since leaving Old Trafford in 2009, with the Spanish giants paying £80million to bring the player to the Santiago Bernabeu.

During his time with Los Blancos, Ronaldo has failed to lift Europe’s biggest prize, but he’s confident Jose Mourinho’s side can get past the Premier League leaders over two legs.

"I believe things will go well. In my opinion Real Madrid have a better team, but we have to show that on the pitch because United are a very united team and always have been in recent years," he told the official UEFA Champions League magazine.

"They're a team that always do well, every year they're at the top and therefore a team we respect a lot. It will be an extremely difficult match, especially in Manchester."

Despite enjoying six successful years with the Red Devils, the FIFA Ballon d’Or runner-up will have no problem focusing on the task at hand when Madrid travel to Old Trafford.

The winger predicted that Madrid would draw Manchester United, and whilst Ronaldo admits it will be a strange feeling, he’s desperate to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

"I actually said beforehand that I believed we would draw Manchester United. I've wanted to face them for some time. I have great memories from my time there,” Ronaldo added.

"It will be a match in which I will feel a lot. I was there for six years. I have a lot of friends there, people I will see with great pleasure, it will be a match with a lot of emotions."

The first leg takes place in the Spanish capital on February 13th, before Madrid travel to Manchester on March 5th for the return fixture.
