Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez hopes Frank Lampard will end the season as the record goalscorer in the club's history, but admits he does not know what the future holds for the veteran midfielder beyond the summer.

Lampard is out of contract at the end of the campaign, and conflicting reports have emerged over the past few days with regards to what will happen when his current deal with Chelsea expires.

It was claimed on Thursday that Roman Abramovich had finally conceded to mounting pressure from Chelsea fans and was ready to begin talks with Lampard to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Daily Star reported on Friday that the player and his representatives are bemused by suggestions that there has been an approach by Chelsea, and the England international is considering an offer from Manchester United.

Benitez, though, is just focused on what Lampard can offer his Chelsea squad right now, and is hopeful the 34-year-old can surpass Bobby Tambling's goalscoring record, with the former West Ham man needing six more strikes to do so.

"I don't like to talk about the issue," Benitez told a press conference on Friday.

"I was very clear in the past and I will be very clear now and in the future, Frank is doing a great job for us, he is scoring goals, playing well and he is a good professional and working very hard.

"This is all I can say, as I am only the coach. The situation for me is the same, he is playing well and hopefully he can score in every game and break the record."
