Manchester United transfer target Robert Lewandowski got a straight red card for a violent kick against Hamburg this afternoon – but was he a bit unlucky?
The Poland international clearly catches his opponent, Hamburg midfielder Per Ciljan Skejlbred, but footage appears to show Lewandowski with his eyes firmly fixed on the ball.
Nevertheless, the referee thought otherwise, and brandished the red card for the striker, who had given Borussia Dortmund the lead earlier in the first-half with a stunning strike.
Former-Spurs star Rafael Van der Vaart got booked for his part in the fracas that followed.
Hamburg had already stormed back to take a 2-1 lead after Lewandowski had opened the scoring, with goals from Rudnevs and Son Heung-Min. But the red card made it difficult for Dortmund to find a way back - even with more than 45 minutes still to play.
Hamburg eventually ran out 4-1 winners – a tremendous result for the fifth-placed side. But that could be the final blow to Dortmund’s hopes of retaining the Bundesliga title – they now sit 12 points behind Bayern Munich, but the Bavarian giants have a game in hand.
