Everton manager David Moyes has revealed he held talks with Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999 about becoming number two at Manchester United.

The Toffees boss has been tipped as a possible successor to Ferguson at Old Trafford when he decides to step down as United boss, though the then Preston manager says he wasn’t bothered about losing out to Steve McLaren for the role.

However, Moyes is also being lined up to take over at Manchester City when Roberto Mancini leaves the Etihad Stadium.

The Citizens were beaten 3-1 at Southampton on Saturday evening, leaving rivals United nine points clear with a game in hand and the pressure building on Mancini in the defence of their Premier League title.

Interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez says he has no idea whether Frank Lampard will sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge, or not.

The Blues legend scored his 12th goal of the season in the 4-1 win over Wigan on Saturday and is reportedly set to be allowed to leave when his contract expires in the summer.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is furious with England manager Roy Hodgson for using the Gunners midfielder for the full 90 minutes against Brazil in midweek.

Wilshere was taken off with an injury in the second half of Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday and Wenger is reportedly “livid” at the Three Lions boss for going back on an agreement not to play the 21-year-old for the full duration of the friendly win at Wembley.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is desperate to hang on to Gareth Bale and claimed losing the winger would be a disaster for the White Hart Lane club.

Bales was the match-winner once more on Saturday, scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United, but his exploits have raised speculation of a possible bid from La Liga giants Real Madrid.
