Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed that Tom Huddlestone will miss Tottenham's Europa League showdown against Lyon on Thursday.

The midfielder has been ruled out of the last 16 tie at White Hart Lane with a minor knee complaint, and joins Jermain Defoe who is struggling with an ankle injury on the sidelines.

Brazilian midfielder Sandro is out for the season, while Younes Kaboul is still some way away from first team action despite returning to training following a lengthy lay-off because of a knee injury.

"Defoe is going to be out, further to our long-term injuries with Younes and Sandro," the Portuguese told

"Tom Huddlestone is going to be out of the game due to some minor pain in the knee. We hope to have most of the players available and free for selection."

Villas-Boas also confirmed Hugo Lloris won't get the opportunity to play against his former side, insisting Brad Friedel will start in goal instead.

“You’ve seen us do exactly the opposite in the Europa League in the past - particularly with Hugo when Brad was playing - and most likely Brad is going to be in goal," he told reporters today.

“It’s a decision we have already taken.

“Obviously we know that this tie represents a lot to Hugo on a personal level because it is against his old club, but I think out of respect for Brad, and the confidence we have in him and what he’s been doing, we will continue to apply exactly the same principle as we applied in the past and rotate the goalkeeper.”

Spurs were handed a boost ahead of the game after it was revealed that Lyon dangerman Yoann Gourcuf wasn't part of the Ligue 1 side's travelling party because of an adductor muscle injury.
