Tottenham defender William Gallas looks set to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer.
Reports suggest manager Andre Villas-Boas wants to lower the wage bill and will look to do so by cutting down the number of central defenders, with Gallas one who may exit come the end of the season.
Spurs were close to selling Michael Dawson last summer, but injuries in the squad meant he stayed, something AVB admitted he was grateful for Dawson.
“We are grateful, in the end. We ended up being on the better side by the fact he agreed to stay with us,” Villas-Boas told the Guardian.
“My squads in the past are built on four central defenders. We decided to go with five this season because of a setback to Younès Kaboul.”
Speaking about Gallas’ influence this season, the former Porto and Chelsea boss said: “William has been a massive player for us this season.”
"He’s a player we trust a lot. Whatever we decide regarding his future, we’ll have to wait and see, but we are aware of what a presence he’s been for us this season.”
Gallas will be 36 in August, and even though there are just a few months remaining on his current contract, he feels that he can play on for at least two more years.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender believes that Spurs are on the verge of winning trophies and the Frenchman wants to be part of the team when they do.
“The players now have the right mentality, they want to win every game. If we don’t, you see that the players are very upset and two years ago they didn’t feel like that. They will definitely win something, if not this season then next season.”
