Arsenal skipper linked with Barcelona switch

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is being linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

The Belgian international centre back would follow in the footsteps of both Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song if he moved to the Nou Camp, with The Sunday People claiming the 27-year-old is being lined-up as a replacement for Eric Abidal.

Vermaelen signed a four-year contract extension at the Emirates Stadium in October 2011, and replaced Fabregas as skipper in north London after the Spaniard returned ‘home’ to Catalonia.

But, his time with the Gunners could be up at the end of the current campaign if Tito Vilanova gets his way, with the La Liga leaders currently scouting the former Ajax star.

And, in an effort to secure the player’s services, Barca could try to tempt Arsene Wenger by throwing Spanish striker David Villa into the mix, despite Arsenal going ‘cold’ on a move, according to the report.

Barcelona aren’t short of funds to make a deal happen either, with the paper claiming the Spanish giants have £40million set aside for transfers at the end of the season.

It all means Arsenal could lose another star player at the end of the campaign, as the quest for trophies continue following the defeat to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup yesterday (Sunday).
