Athletic Bilbao star Fernando Amorebieta is a summer target for Arsenal, according to the defender's agent.

The Daily Mirror reports how the 27-year-old centre-back has attracted interest from a host of European clubs, as he enters the final six months of his contract.

Amorebieta is set to leave San Mames at the end of the season, after Los Leones withdrew their offer of a new and improved contract, meaning the player is free to leave Marcelo Bielsa's side in the summer.

Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala are believed to be monitoring the Venezualan international's situation, but it's Gunners boss Arsene Wenger who has already held talks with Amorebieta about a possible switch to the Emirates Stadium.

"We have had some contacts with Anzhi, they were ready to make a good offer, but my client wants to play in England, so the transfer to Russia was not possible," explained his representative, Gines Carvajal.

"We are in talks with Arsenal, he could join them in June."

The Athletic Bilbao stopper has made over 250 appearances for the Primera Division club, and is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Spain at the moment.

Arsenal will view Amorebieta as a value-for-money acquisition, given his current contract situation, and could press ahead with a deal in the summer.
