Tottenham Hotspur plot summer swoop for Belgian striker

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a summer move for Belgian international striker Christian Benteke, according to reports.

The Daily Mirror claims Andre Villas-Boas is ‘leading the chase’ for the player, who has scored 15 goals in all competitions for Aston Villa this season.

Benteke arrived at Villa Park for a fee of £7million last summer, and immediately impressed up-front for Paul Lambert following the move from Gent. Indeed, the 22-year-old has kept England international Darren Bent out of the starting line-up for much of the season so far in the Midlands.

But, with the club struggling at the bottom of the table and the player’s agent claiming his client is ready to join a ‘top’ side, Spurs are being linked with a move.

The paper claims Villas-Boas has the funds available to make a move, and is eager to add to his strike-force at White Hart Lane.

Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor are the only options currently available to the Tottenham Hotspur boss, and with one injured and the other struggling for form; another attacker seems essential at the end of the season.

Benteke could be available on the cheap if Villa get relegated, whilst Brazilian international Leandro Damiao is another name constantly mentioned alongside Spurs.

The options available for Villas-Boas will certainly be greater if Tottenham secure a Champions League place though, and the north London outfit currently sit fourth in the table – the final qualifying spot for Europe’s top table.
