Arsenal fans are getting restless with Arsene Wenger and his tired, predictable responses after failing to produce much needed wins time and time again.
Incredibly, it’s been 17 years with Wenger at the helm, and while there were certainly many good times, it's getting harder and harder to remember those golden years, as his tenure is turning sour very rapidly.
It now looks likely The Gunners will go eight seasons without a trophy after being ousted from the FA Cup by Blackburn Rovers and then outclassed in the first leg of a Champions League tie at the Emirates by an efficient Bayern Munich side. This leaves many fans calling for Wenger’s head.
Paul Merson, who once played under Wenger at the north London outfit, believes the Frenchman should stay and take responsibility for his mess.
In the Daily Star, Merson says: "He’s got them into this mess – he needs to get them out of it. The players are all his, the decisions are all his, the mistakes are all his.
"He doesn’t have a chairman or an owner lumbering him with players. He’s buying them himself. That’s why it has to be Arsene Wenger who turns it around."
After Wenger’s appointment at Arsenal, Merson stayed on for the 1996/97 season before being sold off to Middlesbrough. Merson played in 423 games for Arsenal and scored 99 goals in all competitions.
"I know Arsene. I played for him. He will be hurt by what’s happening at his club – and I’m sure it’s crossed his mind to walk.
"He must take responsibility and turn it round, but that means admitting his mistakes and learning from them – and I’m not sure he is very good at that."
