Tottenham Hotspur have knocked Arsenal off their perch as the best team in north London, according to Gareth Bale, reports The Sun.

The 23-year-old Welsh winger has stoked the flames ahead of next weekend's Premier League derby clash between the two rivals, by claiming that Spurs have surpassed the Gunners in terms of quality.

Andre Villas-Boas's side sit one point ahead of Arsene Wenger's in the race for fourth spot this year, and can extend their advantage to four points with victory over West Ham at Upton Park on Monday night.

Arsenal claimed a 2-1 win over struggling Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium yesterday, to keep pressure on Spurs and Everton who are also in the race for Champions League qualification.

"I think five or 10 years ago Arsenal were always miles ahead of Tottenham," Bale told The Sun. "But that has changed in recent years.

"Over the past few seasons we have closed that gap and I think now we have overtaken them on the pitch. I think we have the stronger squad.

"Hopefully we can continue to do that off the pitch as well, with the new stadium that is being built. But, on the pitch and as a team now we are a lot more consistent as a club - we're moving in the right direction."

And, ahead of next weekend's meeting between Tottenham and Arsenal at White Hart Lane, Bale added that the Premier League table is proof of just how far his side have come this season.

"Arsenal may say they are still ahead of us. But whatever people's opinions I don't think anyone can deny we are up there fighting with them on merit."
