Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp has expressed his pride after the Gunners announced they would be erecting a statue in his honour.

The former Dutch international was a fans' favourite at the club, scoring 120 goals in 11 successful years in which he won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups. The statue of Bergkamp will stand outside the Emirates Stadium alongside those of Herbert Chapman, Tony Adams and Thierry Henry. Bergkamp told Arsenal's official website of his joy at the news.

"First of all, I am honoured that this is going to happen," he said. "It makes me very proud. Everyone knows that I love Arsenal and that I had a fantastic time at the club."

He added: "For me and my family it was an important period in our lives. Next to that the people were great, the team was amazing and we had a lot of success over the years."

The statue is still in construction and is planned to be unveiled at the start of next season. Bergkamp currently resides in the Netherlands, where he is assistant coach at Ajax, but he stated that he would be present at the Emirates for the big reveal.

"I will do everything I can to be there when it will be unveiled," he said. "It will definitely be a special moment for me which I don't want to miss."

Bergkamp was signed by former Gunners boss Bruce Rioch for £7.5m from Inter Milan in 1995 and the Dutchman's decade in north London marked one of the club's most successful eras. Bergkamp was part of the 'Invicibles' side that completed an undefeated Premier League season in 2003/04 and, according to, his goal against Newcastle in 2002 is the greatest in the club's history.
