Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho believes Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world - and possibly the best ever.

The former-Chelsea boss is set to take on Manchester United in the Champions League last-16 on Tuesday evening, and he believes his side boast the current best player in the world.

Ronaldo has lost out to Barcelona star Lionel Messi at the last four Ballon d'Or awards, but Mourinho is certain the Portuguese forward is the superior forward.

And when asked what's going to help Madrid see off United and advance to the quarter-finals, Mourinho told ITV Sport as reported in the Daily Mirror: "To be my team, nothing else.

"If we are my team, we will win. How do you stop Cristiano Ronaldo? That's not my problem. It's never a problem - I never want to stop Ronaldo. It's their problem.

"He is the best. The best in the world, yes. Probably the best ever.

"I saw Maradona a couple of times. I never saw Pele. But Cristiano is amazing. This man is the best. But even he cant win it on his own. The key is the team and the team needs balance and people doing different tasks. At this level, if somebody fails, we have no chance.

"We never say Cristiano is responsible when we lose a match and we can't think he is the only one who wins it. Without the team he is nothing but the team without him is not the same."

The 'Special One' has been linked with a return to the Premier League after several high-profile spats with first-team players were reported in the Spanish media.

Mourinho guided Madrid to the La Liga title last season - the club's first since 2008 - but they currently trail Barcelona by a massive 13 points this term - despite last weekend's 2-1 victory in El Clasico.

Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly interested in bringing Mourinho back to England, but the former-Blues manager warned the Premier League clubs that he may not come back at the end of this season.

"Yes, England is probably my next job," said Mourinho. "But when, I have no idea. It might not be this summer. I don't know.

"I don't know about my future. My future is not important, especially before a match of this dimension. I want to do everything to help Real win it. I want to enjoy every minute of this match.
