Cristiano Ronaldo leaves door open for Manchester United return

Cristiano Ronaldo wrecked Manchester United's dreams of Champions League glory on an 'emotional' return to Old Trafford on Tuesday, but provided the Red Devils with a glimmer of hope that, one day, he may play for the club again.

The Real Madrid forward scored the decisive goal in the last 16 tie - sliding in to convert a cross from Gonzalo Higuain and provide Los Blancos with a 2-1 victory, following an own goal from Sergio Ramos and leveller from Luka Modric.

Manchester United were, however, left apoplectic following the controversial dismissal of winger Luis Nani, with Real Madrid then able to take advantage and snatch victory in a tie that had been in control of the home side.

Ronaldo has, though, softened the blow somewhat by leaving the door open to a potential return to Manchester United after expressing his gratitude to the club's supporters, and not quite ruling out a possible transfer back to Old Trafford in the future.

"The future you never know but the supporters here [at United] and the club, it's massive. The future you never know but at this moment I'm very happy at Real Madrid and I want to be here," Ronaldo said, as reported by

"It was an unbelievable night. It was very emotional.  What the supporters did for me was massive, I’m never going to forget this moment. I don’t have words for it.

"On one hand I’m happy for Madrid to go through but on the other side I’m sad because it’s not easy to forget. This was my home for six years, the people were very nice with me. I came here as a child.

"It’s quite strange - in both games I felt a little shy in my game. It’s a feeling you cannot explain - it’s just a feeling. I support and I am with the white collar, so these feelings stay in this stadium, the Theatre of Dreams."
