One of Arsene Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ thinks Arsenal need to sign a player like David Villa to start challenging for trophies once again.

The Barcelona forward was linked with a January move to Emirates Stadium but it failed to materialize and Arsene Wenger was reportedly set to look for younger talent this summer.

However, former Gunners right-back Lauren feels Wenger needs to go back in for the Camp Nou striker if he wants to add the necessary quality for his squad to become title challengers.

“Arsenal need a striker like Villa. They need that sort of player,” he told La Xarxa.

“Villa can get you 15, 20, 25 goals in a season, and that's what Arsenal need at the moment. Villa has a lot of talent, scores a lot of goals.”

Arsenal have been criticized for lacking in quality up front with a new forward line this season and Lauren feels the Barcelona man would fir in well with the players Wenger already has.

Should Villa join Arsenal, he would join fellow Spain internationals Santi Cazorla, and Nacho Monreal – something the Cameroonian feels would benefit la Rojas record goalscorer.

“He'd do brilliantly at Arsenal. He'd combine well with Monreal, Cazorla and [Mikel] Arteta,” he added.

"He'd fit in with the Spaniards in the dressing room, and the adaptation period would be very quick."

Villa has struggled to break into the Barcelona starting line up since recovering from a broken leg earlier this season, leading to speculation about his future in Cataluña.

A lack of cutting edge was partly to blame for Arsenal’s defeat to fierce local rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, which meant they trailed the top four teams by five points.

Lauren played for the Gunners six years after moving to north London from La Liga side Mallorca and left having won two Premier League titles, as well as three FA Cups.
