Football in London has always been played at such a high quality to the point that many teams have feared the visit. In the top five – 28 games in, there are three London teams present, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.
The Spurs are currently third, leading Chelsea by 2 points and Arsenal by 7 points. Over the years Tottenham have not been heavy contenders for the top four, but are things changing?
The Gunners were founded in 1886 where they moved from the South of London to the North in 1913 – which caused tension between them and their closest rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal have won the top flight of the English League (First division and Premier League) 13 times, the last time being in 2003-2004. During this season, they did not lose a single game and became known as the ‘Invincibles’.
These were treasured memories of the Arsenal Faithful and are firm fans of Thierry Henry, whom is the clubs top scorer, but he left for Barcelona on the 25th June 2007 for $24 million.
Since the days of the ‘Invincibles’, the Gunners have not won a trophy and are now under speculation, especially for Wenger. This team has not won a trophy for 7 years and this will increase if they do not progress against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Many pundits and fans do not believe that Arsenal have a team to threaten the two Manchester clubs for the number one spot in the table, only a cash injection may help them regain some recognition.
Arsenal have had a disappointing season to date as they sit in fifth position and their Manager, Arsene Wenger has kept them in top four for a long time before this. Arsenal are now being chased down by the Spurs and are in danger of being second best in North London.
Chelsea was formed in 1905 and play at Stamford Bridge in Fulham. Chelsea are rivals with a lot of the London teams, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues have been in the first tier of English Football and had their first success in 1955 where they won the first division. They have won the Premier League in 2004-05, 2005-06 and won it in 2009-10. Chelsea also won the Champions League in the season 2011-12, beating Bayern on penalties, making them one of the highest celebrated clubs since the turn of the millennium.
In 2011, they hired Andre Villas Boas who got sacked in March 2012. This has caused managerial uncertainty as Robert Di Matteo took over, helping win the Champions League, but then got replaced at the end of the season by Rafael Benitez who the fans have not taken kindly to.
The Spurs were founded in 1882 and have stayed in North London for their whole life-span. They are mainly rivals with Arsenal, but other rivalries include Fulham, West Ham and Chelsea.
Tottenham are not as celebrated as the other London teams; you may be thinking ‘how can these compare to the other giants?’, but Tottenham have had a good few years. They have only won the first League in English Football twice, in 1950-51 and 1960-61. They have won the League cup in 2008, their only piece of Silverware since the turn of the Millennium.
Tottenham are the highest ranked London team in the Premier League at the moment and hope to secure their Champions League ambitions. They are now 13 games unbeaten in the League and may even challenge Manchester City for second spot.
Spurs have had a decent run and are currently in great form, but are they deservingly known as the best London Club? Arsenal and Chelsea fans may see this as just a run of form, these clubs are extremely decorated and are noticed as great teams worldwide.
