Barcelona midfielder Alex Song could be in line for a surprising return to Arsenal this summer after failing to inspire at Camp Nou.

According to a report in the Daily Express, Arsene Wenger could be ready to bring back the man he sold for £15million last summer.

Arsenal have been deploying Mikel Arteta in the defensive midfield role since Song’s departure and many have criticized Gunners boss Wenger for failing to adequately replace the Cameroon international.

Song has struggled to break into the starting XI under Tito Vilanova and has drifted further from first team action since the Barça boss went to New York to undergo transfer treatment.

The 25-year-old has made just ten appearances in La Liga all season and only three of those have come since the turn of the year.

Arsenal are reportedly set to hand Wenger a bumper transfer budget in the summer in a bid to rejuvenate his squad for next season.

The Gunners now have a tough task on their hands to secure Champions League football for next season after the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

It left them seven points behind their north London rivals and five points behind Chelsea in fourth.
