Manchester United are hoping to beat Bayern Munich in the battle for Borussia Dortmund forward, Robert Lewandoswki.
The in form Polish striker is tied as leading goal-scorer in the Bundesliga with 16 goals this season. He also has six assists to his name in just 21 appearances. Lewandowski's contract runs out in just 18 months and Dortmund will look to cash-in on the Poland international.
United are currently considering selling a superstar of their own in Wayne Rooney, who was placed on the bench in United's Champions League second-leg defeat against Real Madrid. It's unlikely that a player swap could occur as Rooney's wages put him well out of range for Dortmund.
Bayern have been linked with the talented striker, and are hoping to make the target-man Pep Guardiola's first signing. Rumours have circulated that Bayern and Dortmund may have already reached an unofficial agreement.
The Daily Mail reports that United will have to pay £26 million to land Lewandowski. And Dortmund chief, Hans-Joachim Watzke admits he'd rather keep the Polish International for another year unless a "very good" offer is put on the table.
He said: "I would prefer to keep Robert for another year and then lose him for nothing than accept a sum that is below his market value this summer.
"Certainly, it would take a very good offer for us to part with him before his contract finishes."
Lewandowski's Bundesliga career has been brilliant, with 88 appearances accompanied by 46 goals. In the 2011-2012 annual German knockout competition, DFB-Pokal, the 24-year-old forward lead Dortmund to a 5-2 victory over Bayern in the finals, scoring a hat-trick. He finished as the competition top goal scorer with seven goals in six appearances.
