Rio Ferdinand has hailed David Beckham's money-making ability, and described the former Manchester United midfielder as the perfect example of how a footballer player can maximise his earning potential.

Beckham topped the 2013 Rich List announced yesterday, with the 37-year-old said to be worth a staggering £175 million, almost £60 million more than Barcelona's Lionel Messi, who came in second place.

Beckham, who has forged a successful career on and off the pitch since making his debut for Manchester United in 1992, is currently with Paris Saint-Germain, and recently announced his entire wage packet would be donated to a local charity.

Ferdinand believes his former Manchester United team-mate has shown other professionals how to go about making money by honing their image, but says there are other ways to approach life as a professional player.

I think he's a great advert for how you handle your image,” Ferdinand told

"It looks like the perfect way, because he's always on the front pages if he does anything, [but] you've got him on one hand and you've got Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs on the other, and they chose the other way.

"Giggsy could still go in a magazine if he wanted to, and I'm sure your list reflects that."

The Manchester United defender, who came in 10th place on the rich list with an estimated wealth of £42 million, also says that footballers shouldn't earn more than the armed forces, but says wages in the Premier League can't compete against other sports like basketball and American football.

"Are we overpaid compared to the public service people? The army that serve our country? I'd say definitely," said Ferdinand.

"But we don't get paid as much as athletes from a lot of other sports - the golfers, tennis players, basketball players, the baseball stars, they get paid ridiculous money compared to what we get paid."
