Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup fears Arsenal may lure away his top defender Ashley Williams this summer.

Williams has been impressing all season for the Welsh side and this led to reports of interest in him from Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal have had troubles in their back line all season and the reports claim the 28-year-old is seen as an answer to those problems by the Emirates Stadium chief.

Laudrup was asked about Wenger’s possible interest in Williams and said there he was nothing he could do about the reports other than use it as an indicator his players are in form.

“What can I do? I can’t call Arsenal and say, ‘Is it true?’ I don’t think Arsene Wenger would answer,” he is quoted as saying in The Mirror.

"We will have to live with these stories – it’s part of the game – but it means people have seen what we have done here.”

Williams has been influential in a season that has seen Swansea get to ninth in the Premier League and win the Capital One Cup – the clubs first ever major trophy.

Arsenal are not the only club chasing the Wales international – Liverpool and Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in him.

Laudrup is not surprised by reports that Wenger had been joined by Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers and Old Trafford chief Sir Alex Ferguson in wanting Williams, because he believes the centre-back has been part of a magnificent defensive partnership.

“Ashley has had a great season; he and Chico [Flores, his fellow centre-half] have been a great pair,” added the Dane.

“They are doing great together and I will be unhappy to lose that pairing for next season.”
