Mourinho: Villas-Boas is nothing like me

Jose Mourinho has moved to distance himself from comparisons with Tottenham manger Andre Villas-Boas - but admitted he still follows the career of his former colleague 'closely'.

Villas-Boas worked under Mourinho at Chelsea and Inter Milan before branching out into a managerial career of his own.

Both managers tasted European success at Porto - Mourinho won the Champions League in 2004 while Villas-Boas claimed the Europa League as part of a historic quadruple in 2011- before heading to England to take charge of Chelsea.

Despite the similarities, Mourinho, now in charge of Real Madrid, says he isn't cut from the same cloth as the Tottenham boss.

I don’t see anything of myself in André Villas-Boas. He has accessed places others couldn’t. I follow his career regularly,” Mourinho told RTP1.

“I know there is a José Mourinho effect in the young Portuguese [population]. There is a lot of young people who dream about being a coach. Twenty years ago the youngsters wanted to be players, not coaches.”

The pair's careers have taken different courses since they both left Chelsea, with Villas-Boas re-establishing his reputation at White Hart Lane following his disastrous 8-month spell in west London, while Mourinho went on to claim the Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010 after leaving Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho may leave Real Madrid this summer despite the fact they could end the season winning the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, with Chelsea reportedly keen on securing his services once more alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

The "Special One" has been vocal about his desire to return to England in the past, and says he would only ever leave Madrid to work in one of Europe's major leagues.

"I don’t see myself managing outside Spain, England, Italy or France," he said.
