Borussia Dortmund held in Malaga stalemate

Borussia Dortmund missed a number of clear cut opportunities in their Champions League first-leg quarter-final tie away to Malaga after being held to a draw by the Spanish club.

Dortmund had the better of the game and missed a number of gilt-edged chances as they failed to score an away goal, much to the delight of Manuel Pellegrini, who set his team the target of keeping a clean sheet at home.

Germany international Mario Gotze was the main culprit as he wasted three clear opportunities to score a potentially crucial away goal.

The attacking midfielder was put through early on in the first half by Polish frontman Robert Lewandowski, but found keeper Willy Caballero in the way to deny him.

The Los Boquerones stopper then denied Gotze again with a smart save with his feet after the youngster was found with a clever pass from Ilkay Gundogan.

The German outfit dominated the first-half, and had a goal ruled out for offside midway through the first 45 minutes.

Malaga worked their way back into the game and tested Roman Weidenfeller just before the break when a Joaquin corner was met with a firm header from defender Vitorino Antunes, which could only be parried to Jeremy Toulalan whose follow-up was cleared away from the post by Gotze.

The second half passed with less incident, but there was still an uncharacteristic miss from Manchetser United transfer target Lewandowski, who mis-kicked from 12 yards out.

The highly-rated Spanish playmaker Isco then tested Weidenfeller with a fiercely struck shot from the edge of the box that was beaten away by the stopper.

The two teams will resume their assault on the Champions League next week when they meet at the Signal Iduna Park to decide who will reach the last four.
