Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is set to star in a ‘Messi and Friends’ charity match including 36 of the world’s best players, according to the Daily Mail.

Messi will lead out the all-star cast in Chicago this summer, with a ‘veterans XI’ taking on a ‘world XI’ that will showcase some of the game’s best talent.

The likes of Cesc Fabregas and Thierry Henry are set to team up for the World XI while France and Juventus legend David Trezeguet will turn out for the veterans.

A total of 36 players will be involved at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 6, and the event has been billed as an all-star match much like the NFL’s Pro Bowl or last year’s ‘Word Masters of Soccer’ match that brought together the likes of Clint Dempsey and Luis Suarez among others.

Sergio Codino, vice president of Number 5 LLC, the match’s organiser, said: “This event will feature the world’s greatest players in a festival of soccer, the most popular sport on the planet.

“The Messi and Friends friendly, much like the NFL Pro Bowl or the MLB All-Star Game, will provide fans with an incredible opportunity to witness the world’s greatest athletes from the world of soccer together on the field of competition before the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014.”

Some of the players set to take part this year include Javier Mascherano, Alex Song, Ricky Alvarez, Pablo Aimar, Trezeguet and Henry, although more big names are expected to be announced later.
