The vuvuzela was one of the FIFA World Cup 2010’s hallmarks – an African instrument of drone that echoing round the stadiums as Spain tiki-taked their way to global domination.
But the horn of doom has reared its ugly head again, this time as a weapon of choice for a would-be pitch invader.
Golden Arrows versus Kaizer Chiefs in the South African top flight had already seen a disputed red card when the intruder stormed the field of play and smacked the referee with the vuvuzela.
The referee, Chris Mfiki, had sent off Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane earlier in the first-half of the dour 0-0 draw.
And the fired-up fan obviously took exception to something he’d done because he charged straight at Mfiki and boshed him on the head in a shocking attack. Security officials then charged the pitch to rescue the ref, but the vuvuzela-toting attacker had already struck.
