Following Manchester City’s win over their Manchester rivals United at Old Trafford, Blues midfielder Gareth Barry has insisted that the win was “for the fans.”

The win, which was City’s first successive victory at Old Trafford for 41 years, was hard earned and sent the Blues fans wild despite them still being 12 points behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

And the England midfielder stated that the players were also in a very upbeat mood following the game.

“The dressing room was a great place to be,” Barry told reporters after the game.

“Not many teams go to Old Trafford and win like that, so to do it two years on the trot is great for us and for the fans. We will press on until it is mathematically impossible to win the title, but the night was more about our fans, and the bragging rights.”

City took the lead thanks to fine work from Barry who pounced on a mistake by Ryan Giggs, winning the ball before advancing with it and then crossing to find James Milner who found the back of the net.

And the 32-year-old revealed that Mancini’s men had been working hard in training on targeting United duo Michael Carrick and Giggs, which evidently paid off.

Barry added: “We worked on it in training, trying to press Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs, and it paid off for the first goal."

However Ferguson’s side found a way back into the game as Phil Jones’ header went in off City captain Vincent Kompany, but the Blues kept their cool in a very lively atmosphere and retook the lead when Sergio Aguero scored a excellent solo goal.

“We were then disappointed to concede, but we kept calm and Sergio scored a great goal. We didn’t allow them to press us, stuck to our game plan, and then Sergio coming on added to what we already had on the pitch," Barry continued.

“His goal was reminiscent of last year, as we were all waiting for him to pull the trigger – it was a fantastic finish.”
