Manchester City urged to beat rivals to star names this summer

Roberto Mancini this week lamented Manchester City's inability to land their top transfer targets last summer, with the Premier League leadings missing out on Robin van Persie and Eden Hazard, and the Italian has been urged not to allow the same thing to happen again.

Manchester City were very much in the running to sign both Van Persie and Hazard, but failed to land either of the pair as the former joined Manchester United and the latter secured a transfer to Chelsea.

Mancini believes Manchester City would have been able to defend their Premier League title had the club been able to recruit the players he had outlined at the start of the summer transfer window, and former Blue Niall Quinn says his former side must do more this year.

Quinn told "The scouting system will be in meltdown now making sure they get the right person ahead of Manchester United and Chelsea this summer."

The former Republic of Ireland international, who scored 66 times in over 200 appearances as a Manchester City, also feels that the Etihad Stadium club have been missing a bit of 'sparkle' this season.

Quinn says Manchester City lack that extra bit of quality compared to their rivals, and believes the club may have to let one of their star names leave at the end of the season in order to recruit a better alternative.

“If everything goes Mancini’s way and he’s still here with the full confidence of the owners, I think he probably needs to bring another bit of sparkle to the team,” he added.

“I think they have to be careful on their FIFA Financial Fair Play model, so they can live within their means, you may see Man City do a bit of business now.

“Maybe even let a good one go to get a better one and freshen things up.

“We are used to seeing them buy and buy and buy and very seldom do we see them let a big star go but they may have to play that game now."
