He continues to nurse a niggling thigh injury which has kept him out of action for the Reds for quite some time and now he has been dealt a further blow in his bid to get back into action.
Liverpool were keen to rest him for the remainder of their league campaign but the youngster was expected to make his return for the under-21s as he is one of their key players. This will come as a blow for Stuart Pearce's men who stand a real chance of success in the competition.
Sterling made an excellent start to the season under new boss Brendan Rodgers and looked to have a good understanding with Luis Suarez and co but a lack of form and injuries has dented his progress.
He has however made 24 league appearances this season and scored two goals and is set to have a big future in the game. He is highly regarded by the manager and his decision to rest him until next season shows how important he sees him in the clubs future.
The 18-year-old will be looking to displace the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Stewart Downing and Philippe Coutinho in the Liverpool starting eleven next season which is full of pace and trickery.
His ability is sure to be missed at Anfield for the rest of the season as they continue to push for a European place and England will almost definitely miss his absence too.
