Ex-Liverpool striker John Aldridge has urged the club to consider a summer move for West Ham United midfielder Mohamed Diame.

The 25-year-old Senegalese international impressed against the Reds at Anfield on Sunday, building on his reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

And, Aldridge is convinced the former Wigan Athletic star could add plenty to the Merseyside outfit next season if they can lure him to the club.

“One player I would urge Liverpool to keep tabs on is a brute of a midfielder we saw in action at Anfield this weekend,” he wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo.

“Mohamed Diame is a tremendous player and so strong and powerful in that central role.

“He is exactly what the Reds need in there and in the two games between Liverpool and West Ham United this season he has been the best player.”

Diame was heavily linked with a move away from the Hammers in the January transfer window, with reports claiming the former Lens youth team player had a £3.5million minimum fee release clause in his contract.

However, Sam Allardyce managed to keep the powerhouse at Upton Park throughout the transfer window. But, questions still persist on Diame's future, with the Hammers chief questioned on the issue after the 0-0 draw at Liverpool.

"His future will bubble up in the summer again so it`s up to us to give Mo our best offer," he revealed post-match.

"If we can't keep him then we'll use the money to try and get a better player than him. There is still a buy-out clause, but no-one triggered that in January."

Arsenal were the front-runners to land the player back in January, and it remains to be seen if Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will follow the advice of Aldridge and pursue Diame's signature at the end of the season.
