Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart says he hopes his current club Hamburg can keep hold of their best players - including Spurs striker target Heung-min Son.

The Bundesliga club are struggling financially and may have to sell off their best players in the summer, which could mean the departure of Son.

The 20-year-old South Korean is considered one of the brightest young talents in the Bundesliga, and has reportedly been watched by a host of Premier League clubs.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been linked with a move for Son, but it is Tottenham who are said to be in the driving seat and are ready to snap up the talented youngster this summer.

The Evening Standard reported yesterday that Son had told friends that he 'expected' to be playing for Tottenham next season - although the fact Hamburg are preparing a £45,000-per-week contract offer which may complicate matters.

And Van der Vaart, who became a fan favourite during his two-year spell at White Hart Lane after joining the club in 2010 from Real Madrid, says his current - club who he joined in the summer - must keep hold of their best players in the summer if they are to progress.

"It would be great if we could add to the squad," the Dutch international, who has struck up an excellent relatinoship with Son since joining the club, said. "We need more experienced players with a winning mentality.

"But I know there is not much money to strengthen the team. So it is important to make sure our best players stay."

That may be difficult for Hamburg because of the calibre of Son's suitors, while the fact he is out of contract in 2014 may twist their arm in to selling up this summer if he turns down the offer of a contract extension.
