England bowlers struggle against New Zealand

England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to field as he believed the drop-in pitch would only get easier to use as a batting surface.

However, his decision quickly backfired and the home side cruised along to reach 250 runs, with a sterling 124 from Peter Fulton and 83 from Kane Williamson putting the Kiwis firmly in the driver's seat.

Steven Finn took the only wicket for England, dismissing Hamish Rutherford for 37.

For the first time in the series it seems as though the weather will not play a part in this Test, and it is hard to see England's batsmen even without Kevin Pieterson struggling on the pitch.

England now can probably see 0-0 for the series as a good result, in a set of matches they were expected to dominate.

England will need quick wickets on day two or will face a huge first innings chase the following day and by the look of the conditions along with the scoreline they may be doing just that.
