England legend Paul Gascoigne has thanked a string of Premier League players for their help during his battle against alcoholism.

The former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur star spent several weeks in the £7,500-a-week Cottonwood clinic in Arizona, with a host of stars providing the cash to keep the 45-year-old in treatment.

And, despite admitting that a number of ‘helpers’ wanted to remain anonymous, ‘Gazza’ was happy to name names during an interview on the Alan Carr Chatty Man show.

“I like to think they saved a good man. The support I got was fantastic,” he said, according to The Daily Star.

“A few of them didn’t want to be mentioned but it was Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Jack Wilshere, there was Sir Alan Sugar – I mean, wow, that man is so tight he only cries from one eye, so that was nice.

“I think Man United chipped in – there were loads of people. Whatever money was left was given to other funds. Chris Evans was fantastic - he got the ball rolling.

“From the bottom of my heart I am really grateful.”

However, Gascoigne did admit that he misses ‘a pint’, and can’t say for sure if he will never drink again, despite being in a coma for three days after his last relapse.

“It’s been three months since I had a drink. I do miss a pint. I’ll never say never. I might drink again in the future,” he added.

“I don’t plan to, I’ve got to keep my eye on the ball and do the right things. But I’ve got an addictive personality.

"For me it’s just that I fancy a pint. I think I’ll be alright for one and I get too excited. It’s all right getting there but once I’m drunk I’m a nightmare.”

Gazza also revealed his charitable-side in the interview, revealing he gave away £1million during his time as a player. He also called on Premier League players to help create a fund for those who need financial help.

“While I was playing I gave £1million to charity. Nobody knows that,” he concluded.

“I’ve had old dears sending me letters saying they don’t have enough money for Christmas dinner so I’ve sent them money.

“If all the Premier League players did that there would be £60m in a fund for people to get well.”

Gascoigne’s spell on the Alan Carr sofa can be seen tonight (Friday) on channel 4.
