Bayern Munich-Barcelona tie excites Rummenigge

Barcelona will face Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final, and will play their first game in Germany at the Allianz Arena.

Both Spanish clubs avoided each other by drawing German opposition, with Real Madrid facing Borussia Dortmund.

The Catalan giants are on course to regain the Spanish league title as well as being favourites to progress to the final at Wembley.

Should Barca achieve this, winning the Champions League at the home of football will set an enviable record in which the Spanish giants would have won their third European Cup in the north London stadium.

An added incentive is the dedication shown by manager Tito Vilanova, who has been constantly under-going cancer treatment yet has managed to guide his team this far.

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has been absent through serious illness in recent times, and believes winning the trophy will be a perfect tribute to his coach.

When the two sides met in the previous round four years ago, Barcelona won 5-1 on aggregate, but Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who placed his sides ribbons on the trophy prior to last year's final, is optimistic of Bayern's chances this time around.

"I'm really excited that we will face the best team in Europe. I still feel Barcelona are the big favourites to win the Champions League", he told

Barcelona will be aiming to reach their eighth European Cup final and their fourth since it became the Champions League, and Rummenigge knows just how dangerous Messi and company can be.

"We played them in 2009 and received a real thumping. I remember that game well and I don't really like to think about it because it was quite painful to watch", he added.

Barcelona's odds to win the competition have increased slightly after the draw but nevertheless the benchmark team of recent years will still be favourites to make it to Wembley for the final on May 25th.
