Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports News that he fully expects Liverpool to keep hold of Luis Suarez.
Liverpool's 500-appearance man has revealed the true extent of his admiration for Suarez, and added that he expects him to win the illustrious PFA Player of the Year this season.
"He is vital. He is one of the top players, not just in the Premier League, but in world football," said the 35-year-old defender, who plans to retire in May after a total of 23 years at the Merseyside club. "It would be a big surprise to me if he is not PFA Player of the Year. I think the Premier League has been good for him and he has been a star.
"We are desperate to keep him. I'm sure he will be staying, I think he loves it here and the fans love him."
Suarez has been subject of much interest from both rival clubs and the media, having scored 22 goals in 31 league appearances this campaign.
Despite signing a long-term contract in August, Liverpool's lack of consistency and struggle to regain their place in European football has also contributed to the speculation. The Reds lie seventh on the league table after being held to a goalless draw by West Ham.
However, Carragher expects manager Brendan Rodgers to strengthen the squad this summer by spending heavily in the transfer window.
"Where we are in the league, it's important we improve the squad and bring in some additions," Carragher added. "Where we are at the moment is not where we want to be."
But the experienced defender hopes that Rodgers will be equally shrewd in keeping key current players.
He concluded: "It's not just Suarez, we have got lots of top players and we want to keep hold of them all."
