In recent years, more emphasis has been placed on pace and trickery rather than physicality.
The world’s left-backs have followed that trend with the likes of Fabio Coentrao and Jordi Alba coming to the forefront of the game.
Now let’s take a look at the most valuable left-backs in the world, according to Transfermarkt.
5. Fabio Coentrao | Real Madrid | Value: £16m
The Portuguese international was one of compatriot José Mourinho’s first signings as Real Madrid manager and his value has dipped somewhat by over €10m.
4. Leighton Baines | Everton | Value: £19.5m
The Everton Duracell bunny may be one of the best left–backs in the world, but he still only has 15 caps for England. At 28, he misses out on third place as his competitors are younger.
3. David Alaba | Bayern Munich | Value: £19.5m
The Austrian has enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Champions League semi-finalists and, at 20, he is looking like one of the hottest properties in Europe at the moment.
2. Jordi Alba | FC Barcelona | Value: £22m
A fantastically skilful and defensively-sound customer, Alba caught the eye last year with his goal in the final of the Euro 2012 final and has continued that form into this term.
1. Marcelo | Real Madrid | Value: £26.5m
Perhaps a slightly contentious decision, Marcelo is rated by our friends at Transfermarkt as £4.5m better than Alba. However, as the current left-back in the FIFA Team of the Year, he is a creditable choice.
What do you think? Are these valuations justified?
