Chelsea captain John Terry has spoken about the squad rotation policy used by current manager Rafael Benitez, saying that he accepts it wholly.
It had been suggested that Terry had been frustrated at the lack of first team starts this year, but the former England international has nothing but support for Chelsea’s interim manager, who can still win the Europa League this year.
“There will be no frustrations publicly. Naturally everyone is disappointed if they don’t play football matches. We all want to be on the field, but unfortunately with a big squad that’s not always the case,” Terry said.
Benitez has come under fire from angry Chelsea supporters all season, and a rift with the popular club-captain would have not helped at all - especially at a time when Chelsea are pushing for a Champions League place for next season.
Terry has reiterated that there is no rift between him and the manager, and that he accepts all of Benitez's decisions.
"It's not an automatic selection but at the same time we respect that," he added. "That's the manager's decision.
Despite Terry's recent struggle to hold down a regular first-team berth this season, the captain was in good form in midweek, bagging two goals in a 3-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Terry also admitted that Benitez's selection policy was a key factor in his good performance in the victory.
"If he chooses not to play us we are very much professional and we will do our job whether we play or not," the 32-year-old concluded. "When we do get a chance to come in and do well and obviously score the goals (speaking about the Fulham victory) it's an added bonus for myself."
