Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez believes Steven Gerrard made the right decision in rejecting a transfer to Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Gerrard was continuously linked with a move to Roman Abramovich's Chelsea during Benitez's six year-stint at Anfield and the Spaniard is glad the Liverpool captain rejected his current employers.
“He won the Champions League and he is a legend in Liverpool. I think he will say he made the right decision at the time," Benitez told the Daily Mail.
Benitez also banished suggestions Gerrard and Blues star Frank Lampard were unable to form a successful midfield partnership for the England national side.
He added: “They can play together, especially now they have more experience. When they were younger, they were so good they wanted to be involved in every part of the pitch.
"They are great players, both are very good technically and both can score goals. They have a lot of good things in common."
Interim manager Benitez, who will be leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, returns to Anfield this weekend for the first time since his 2010 departure from the Reds.
Chelsea will be hoping to build on their 3-0 derby win over Fulham and opponents Liverpool will be looking to close the six-point gap on Merseyside rivals Everton.
