Charlton keep play-off hopes alive with late Wolves win

Charlton Athletic still have an outside chance of gaining a play-off spot in the Npower Championship following a dramatic late winner against relegation-threatened Wolves.

Substitute Jonathan Obika struck in the 90th minute to ensure three points and keep the Addicks in the hunt for a top six finish. Dorian Dervite had put the hosts in-front with a scruffy opener, before Kevin Doyle leveled with a header from Jack Robinson's cross.

However, manager Chris Powell admitted that their recent good form might just have come too late.

“It’s tantalisingly close, the play-offs, but it might just be beyond us. My staff and myself have looked at what we could do and the players have really pushed themselves at a time in the season where a lot of teams’ energy levels drop,” the former England full-back told the official Charlton website.

Powell maintains that his side have done nothing differently on the training ground that has sparked a sudden surge in form.

‘There’s been no changes whatsoever,” he added. "That’s why I was saying when we were losing games and it was very close, it was marginal.”

The Londoners have two matches remaining this term – against out-of-sorts Middlesbrough and already relegated Bristol City – but must hope other results also go their way.

“We will still go for it,” Powell said. "There is a slim chance and you never know what’s going to happen, especially this time now with how results can go.”

Charlton have exceeded most people’s expectations this campaign, but still might be left wondering what might have been at the Valley this season.

“In hindsight you can look back on games, but this is football,” reflected Powell.

“There are maybe results we got that we didn’t deserve. I suppose we wish there were 10 games to go, not two.”
