Harry Redknapp believes the survival hopes for QPR slipped away when West Brom's Peter Odemwingie failed to force through a move.

The potential deal for the Nigerian striker was littered with controversy and the 'sour grapes' that were caused left the club with a negative outlook.

The arrival of players at a training ground usually spells a done deal on transfer deadline day, but the QPR boss explains to the Daily Mirror what went wrong.

“We couldn’t have got much closer to signing him – he was outside our front door – but he made one big mistake, the kid. He turned up at the football club, he was silly," said the former Tottenham chief.

The Hoops had targeted Odemwingie for his goal scoring prowess and pace according to Redknapp, who rues the break down of the deal.

“He might have really given us something up front, with Bobby Zamora not being 100 per cent fit. He might have scored four or five goals that make the difference," he added.

QPR could have done with some quality up front on Saturday, as they recorded their 18th defeat of the season to a Stoke side who have also been struggling for form.

Rangers travel to Reading on Sunday in what could relegate either side from the Premier League. Redknapp himself has accepted relegation to the Championship and has had his say on what he would have done with his time again.

“Apart from results, I wouldn’t have changed an awful lot about the last five months, really. I’d probably have tried harder to get the boy from West Brom, Odemwingie."
