Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has had his appeal the red card he received against Fulham on Saturday rejected by the FA.

The Frenchman was sent off late on in the Gunners' 1-0 at Craven Cottage for a dangerous tackle on Stanislav Manolev, following Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell, who was sent off early in the first half for a similar tackle, off the pitch.

Arsenal lodged an appeal soon after the game, however the FA have confirmed today they will not overturn the decision.

"Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today, Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has had his claim for wrongful dismissal rejected," a statement on the governing body's website read.

"Giroud was dismissed for serious foul play during his side's game against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday 20 April 2013.

"The player's three-match suspension will therefore commence with immediate effect."

The French striker, a summer signing from Montpellier, will miss Arsenal's games against Manchester United, QPR and Wigan, and will return to action in time for the Gunners' last game of the season against Newcastle.

Arsenal are currently locked in a battle for a top four finish with rivals Tottenham and Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger's side sit in third place currently, a point clear of Chelsea and two clear of Spurs having played a game more.
