£15m asking price pushes Arsenal towards £5m Bundesliga star

Arsenal have singled out Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler after being priced out of moves for their two primary targets.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wanted either Stoke City number one Asmir Begovic or Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet, according to the Daily Mirror.

The report claims the Gunners baulked at the asking fees being asked from the pair of Premier League clubs – Wenger feels £15million is severely overpriced.

This had led Arsenal scouts to identify the 28-year-old Germany international as a more affordable option.

In fact, Adler would be eminently more affordable as the report suggests a fee of £5million pounds may be enough to do a deal.

A saving of £10million pounds from their other targets is enticing enough, but Arsenal would also be getting a vastly more experienced player.

Hamburg are one of the most high-profile clubs in the Bundesliga and so Adler is accustomed to pressures of playing for a big club, as well as on the international stage.

Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen to provide greater competition for Wojciech Szczesny and even for someone to take over as number one.

Szczesny was dropped for compatriot Lukasz Fabianski against Bayern Munich earlier in the season and has only come back in due to the latter’s rib injury.
