Gareth Barry believes his decision to remain with Aston Villa has been justified as he prepares to face Tottenham in the Boxing Day clash at White Hart Lane.

Barry was a Spurs fan as a youngster and the north London club were one of those linked with signing him when he was contemplating leaving Villa last summer. But Barry opted to instead sign a new four-year deal with Villa, was made skipper by manager Martin O´Neill and has been in outstanding form.

Barry told PA Sport: "Tottenham were one of the clubs being linked with me. I´m glad I made the decision I did. At the time it was a big decision for myself. I think I can sit here and say it was the right one judging on how my season has gone and how I think the team can do this season."
