Newcastle United are interested in signing Reading goalkeeper and Liverpool target Alex McCarthy, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims Toon chief Alan Pardew is keen on the 23-year-old, with uncertainty surrounding his current options between the sticks.

Tim Krul’s future at St. James’ Park is far from certain, according to the paper, whilst veteran stopper Steve Harper could also leave the club at the end of the season.

Their exits would leave Rob Elliot as the only senior stopper currently on Newcastle’s books.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been credited with an interested in the player as Brendan Rodgers considers his transfer options.

The paper claims the Reds have ‘earmarked’ the player after his man-of-the-match performance in their Premier League clash at the Madejski Stadium earlier in the month.

Indeed, McCarthy has been in fine form for the Royals in recent weeks, but his arrival would raise a serious question over the future of Pepe Reina at Liverpool.

The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move away from Anfield during the January transfer window, although that speculation has died down in recent months.
