With the latest Luis Suarez controversy casting a shadow over the beautiful game that seems to grow bigger every year, I thought it would be a nice change of pace to highlight some of the more humorous side of Football.
Here are five of the best incidents that shows Football isn’t all bad.
1. Cardiff pitch Invader
Many of us have been in the state of ecstasy when your favourite club scores a crucial last minute winner. Most of us will jump up and down, screaming like lunatics. Some of the more daring might even undertake a pitch invasion.
However, after Robert Earnshaw’s late equaliser for Cardiff against Hartlepool in 1998 one fan seemed to get confused between the two. He darted onto the pitch in joy, but after seeing a burly steward making a beeline for him he turned to head back to his seat.
However, his angles had become confused and he ran full-force into the post. He was knocked unconscious, much to the amusement of the crowd.
2. Phil Babb’s slide
Poor Phil Babb. Liverpool’s brave-heart defender always gave maximum effort for his team and was never shy about putting his body on the line, but he took this sentiment a little too far in 1998 as his side took on Chelsea at Anfield.
Following a Liverpool corner Chelsea mounted a counter attack. Never one to leave his fellow defenders alone, Babb raced the full length of the pitch to get back in position. He continued at full speed to produce a slide to try and block the Chelsea shot, only to slide legs-open straight into the post. He didn’t block the shot either.
3. The Manchester United invader
This incident had to make the list for sheer guts. Manchester United were all set to take on Bayern Munich in a hotly-anticipated Champions’ League tie. As they were undertaking the usual pre-match formalities, something didn’t seem quite right in the team photo.
It turned out there were 12 men in the photo with Karl Power joining on the end. The prankster from Manchester simply walked from the crowd, in a full kit, and joined on the end of the photo. Unbelievable bravery from a man who will go down in history as Manchester United’s twelfth man that night.
4. The worst penalty kick ever
Peter Devine is not the most well-known footballer in the world, but fans of comedy Football clips will know the man all-too-well. During an FA Trophy penalty shootout between Lancaster City and Whitley Bay, Devine stepped up confidently, ready to dispatch his penalty and set his team towards victory.
However, during his run-up Devine slipped over and fell into the ball, sending it all of two yards towards the goal. He remained down, although the injury was more of shame than anything physical. Oh, and his team also lost.
5. Yakubu chases a chicken
Yes, this really is as ridiculous as it sounds. Last season in the midst of a fans revolt against their new owners, the Venkys, one Blackburn fan decided to dress a chicken in a Blackburn flag and set it loose on the pitch (the Venkys made their fortune in the chicken farming industry).
Needless to say the heavy-set Nigerian forward Yakubu took it upon himself to dispose of the clucking fiend, and duly chased after it. However, the chicken was not to be immediately outsmarted as it began its great escape. Although Yakubu quickly caught the small bird, the brief moment of hilarity of him chasing it will last long in the fans’ memories.
