El-Hadji Diouf has been fined two weeks' wages after Saturday's x-rated celebration gesture to the Brighton away fans.

Diouf converted a spot kick and then issued a signal to the away end, which the referee spotted. The red card automatically followed.

The Senegalese bad boy was dealt with by his new boss Brian McDermott, and the club have subsequently confirmed the fine.

McDermott told the official Whites website: "I've spoken to El-Hadji Diouf and he has apologised regarding the sending off on Saturday."

The Leeds manager explained two weeks is the 'maximum' club punishment he could issue, and that he still wants Diouf to be a member of his side at Elland Road next year despite his questionable temperament.

The ex-Liverpool and Celtic man is never too far from a footballing spat on the field, with a number of run-ins with fans and unnecessary red mist flair-ups.

The former Reading gaffer told the Yorkshire Post: “I have had a really good conversation with Dioufy. It is important he understands my position. I will stand by him every day of the week, as long as he does things right.

“He is committed very much to playing for Leeds next season. I asked him that question and spoke to him about getting as fit as he possibly can in the summer and to come back ready. Then, it is a case of: ‘Can he be part of something and a group with a winning mentality.’ He wants to do that and be part of it and I was delighted to hear that."

Diouf will serve a three-match ban for his gesture, meaning the spikey-haired winger will not feature in his side's final game of the Npower Championship season - a trickly looking trip to automatic-promotion chasing Watford.
