Liverpool face a transfer battle with Inter Milan over the services of Barcelona defender Martin Montoya, according to reports.

TalkSPORT claims Reds chief Brendan Rodgers is already considering his summer transfer options, and is looking to strengthen the Reds’ defence ahead of Jamie Carragher’s retirement.

22-year-old Montoya has emerged on the Liverpool radar, with the radio station reporting that Rodgers is a big admirer of the full-back.

However, the report also claims that Inter are making ‘advanced moves’ to bring the Spanish U23 international to the San Siro, and that the Anfield outfit will need to move quickly to bring the player to Merseyside.

The Serie ‘A’ side are also in the market for a defender, with veteran Javier Zanetti set for an extended spell on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

Barcelona will be looking for a sizable transfer fee, given the interest of two parties in their player, and Liverpool may have to pay a big price to lure the player in their direction from Catalonia.
