Chelsea star David Luiz added to his goalscoring record with absolute beauty against Swiss side FC Basel on Thursday night, curling in an effortlessly weighted strike from 30 yards.
Luiz was Cheslea's saviour in the first leg, curling in a free-kick that gave Chelsea the vital second goal that they required. And the Brazilian was back to his goalscoring ways in the second leg, this time showing he can hit the mark in open play, with his left foot.
Frank Lampard had let the ball run to ex-Benfica defender Luiz who, instead of blasting the ball as many reformed midfielders may have done, steadied himself and unleashed a beautiful curled effort into the top-left hand corner past Basel keeper Yan Sommer.
Up to this point, Basel were well in the game, but Luiz settled any remaining nerves amongst the Stamford Bridge crowd with a goal that will potentially go down in Europa League history.
In the game, a 50th-minute Torres strike, followed closely by a Victor Moses goal in the 52nd minute put the Blues well in the ascendency until Luiz tried his luck from range.
It wasn't all plain sailing for Rafael Benitez's Chelsea, though, as Mohamed Salah clipped the ball past the onrushing Petr Cech after good work from Stocker in the 45th minute, seconds before the half-time whistle.
The final score finished 3-1 to Chelsea, meaning that they progress into the Europa League final in Amsterdam.
