Fenerbahce defender Gokhan Gonul will have woken up with a very sore head this morning, and that's not because he'd been out celebrating his side's qualification for the Europa League final.

In fact, the Turkish giants lost their semi-final against Benfica 3-2 on aggregate, following a 3-1 defeat at Estadio da Luz in the second leg on Thursday night, with the visitors' collapse coming after Gonul was stretchered off having been knocked completely unconscious.

The 28-year-old spent several minutes lying motionless on the pitch with blood oozing from his mouth, after a horror high-boot challenge by Benfica's Nicolas Gaitan on the hour mark.

Gaitan had opened the scoring for the hosts before a Dirk Kuyt penalty restored parity, giving Fenerbahce hope of reaching the final in Amsterdam on May 15.

But, Oscar Cardozo's second-half double ensured the Portuguese club's progression, setting up a showpiece encounter with Chelsea later this month, after Rafa Benitez's men saw off the challenge of Swiss side FC Basel with a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, taking them through 5-2 on aggregate.

Gonul spent the night in hospital where he was treated for concussion and a broken cheekbone, and to add insult to injury, the Turkish international will have to face up to Fenerbahce's elimination, but also the loss of several teeth as a direct result of the incident.

Check out Gaitan's horrific challenge in the video below - and leave a comment with whether or not you think the Benfica star should have been sent off after knocking Gonul out cold!
