Arsenal are reported to be closing in on the signing of Stevan Jovetic in the summer transfer window after opening advanced talks with Fiorentina regarding a proposed deal for the Montenegro international.

According to, Fiorentina have intimated to the Gunners that they would be willing to sell Jovetic after the north London club had initially expressed their interest in the striker a number of weeks ago.

This is reported to have resulted in talks intensifying between the two parties, although a fee remains to be agreed, with Fiorentina valuing the 23-year-old at upwards of £25 million.

It is claimed, however, that Arsenal are confident of capturing Jovetic for a transfer fee of £20 million or less, while the player himself is keen to move to the Emirates Stadium when the window opens in July.

A potential sticking point, however, would be Arsenal's failure to qualify for the Champions League, with Jovetic making clear he would only leave Fiorentina for a club playing in Europe's top tier competition.

Arsenal's position in the top four is not yet guaranteed, with the Gunners only two points clear of fifth placed Tottenham and Spurs retaining a game in hand over their north London neighbours.

Andre Villas-Boas' side play third placed Chelsea on Wednesday night in a potentially pivotal encounter in the race for a place in next season's Champions League.
