Former Manchester United full-back turned Sky Sports expert Gary Neville has named his Premier League team of the year - and has included former rival Steven Gerrard in midfield.

Neville has established himself as one of the leading pundits in the UK following his retirement from the game, earning rave reviews for his tactical nous and frank opinions.

Now he has put together his Premier League team of the season which contains few shocks, except for the inclusion of former Liverpool rival Gerrard.

Indeed the team is identical to the one named by the PFA as their Team of the Year except for the omission of Chelsea's Eden Hazard, who makes way for Gerrard.

Neville said of his decision to include the Liverpool skipper:  "This position was the biggest problem to pick and I put it down to stats in the end.

"I went for Steven Gerrard because he's played the most minutes of any player in the Premier League this season, other than Leighton Baines, and he has the most goals and assists combined of any midfielder.

"He's been almost ever-present and has basically contributed nine goals and nine assists to his team. For many years he's been a central midfielder who can attack and defend in equal measure."

Manchester United are well represented with David de Gea in goal, Robin van Persie leading the line, Rio Ferdinand in defence and Michael Carrick in midfield alongside Gerrard.

Controversial Liverpool striker Luis Suarez makes the team up front alongside Van Persie, while Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is named as Ferdinand's partner at the back having impressed since making his summer switch from Ajax.

Vertonghen's club team-mate and double-PFA award winner Gareth Bale is on the left ahead of Everton's Leighton Baines who's at full-back, while on the opposite flank Pablo Zabaleta is behind Juan Mata - Manchester City and Chelsea's only entrants in the side.

What do you think of Neville's team? Does Santi Cazorla deserve a spot, and did Michu do enough to warrant a place? Leave your comment below!
